Man and teenager to stay in custody over the weekend after boy is shot in Sunderland

A man and a teenage boy have appeared before magistrates after the shooting of a teenager in Ryhope.

Steven Thompson, 39, of Hewitt Avenue, Ryhope, and the 16-year-old boy appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court this morning.

Thompson is charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, perverting the course of justice and possession of a firearm without a certificate.

The teenager is accused of perverting the course of justice and possession of a firearm without a certificate.

The 15-year-old boy, who was shot on Wednesday evening, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The two defendants appeared in the dock, side by side, dressed in grey sweatshirts.

Magistrates agreed they should stand trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

No pleas were entered and the case was adjourned until November 4.

There was no application for bail on behalf of Thompson and he was remanded in custody.

The boy was also remanded in custody and is due to appear back at the court on Monday.
