Man to appear in court following armed swoop in South Shields

Darren Lockyer, 37, of Newmarket Walk, South Shields, has been charged following an alleged stabbing incident on Westoe Road yesterday.

He is appearing at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court this morning charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear and threatening a person with a firearm in a public place.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Following an incident in South Shields yesterday where a man was stabbed on Westoe Road police have charged Darren Lockyer, 37, of Newmarket Walk, South Shields, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear and threatening a person with a firearm in a public place.

"He is due to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates Court this morning."

The court appearance follows an incident involving armed officers from Northumbria Police, the force helicopter, and the dog section yesterday morning.
