Man arrested after report of rape in South Shields

A man has been arrested after reports that a woman was raped in South Shields town centre.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of rape.

Police say a 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after they received a report from a woman that she was sexually assaulted.

It is said to have happened in the early hours of Sunday in Ocean Road.

The man has been released on police bail.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman reported she had been sexually assaulted in Ocean Road in the early hours of Sunday, October 9.

“The man has been released on police bail and inquiries are ongoing.”
