Man arrested on suspicion of race hate assault after incident in South Shields Asda

A man has been arrested on suspicion of racial/religiously aggravated assault after an incident in Asda.

Police were called to the Coronation Street store at 12pm on Saturday, April 2 after the alleged incident, understood to have involved an attack on an Asian man in the supermarket's car park.

The Gazette understands it followed an earlier incident inside the store where a man was verbally abusing an Asian woman and her child. Another female shopper is said to have come to her aid.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racial/religious aggravated assault after an incident at Asda in Coronation Street in South Shields at 12pm on Saturday, April 2."

A spokeswoman for Asda added: "I can confirm an incident happened in our store and we’re currently assisting the Police with their enquiries.
