
The incident happened outside the Union Jack Club in Hilda Terrace, Throckley, Newcastle, at about 9pm yesterday.
The 50-year-old victim had just parked when his vehicle was rammed by a white Transit van containing several men.
They got out of the van and attacked him in the car park, beating him with bats and spraying a noxious substance in his face.
Police were called and attended the scene.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and is currently detained in custody.
The other people involved in the incident left the area before police arrived, leaving the van behind.
The victim was treated at the scene by ambulance staff but did not attend hospital.
Officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area.
Sergeant Pinner Rana said: "We want to make it clear we will not tolerate such incidents of violence in our communities.
"We are asking for help from the public and want to hear from any witnesses and anyone who can assist us to identify and locate those involved.
"We also have additional officers in the area to speak to members of the community and offer reassurance and deal with any concerns they may have."
Police are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, is asked to contact police.
