A man is "critical" in hospital after being attacked on a night out.
The man in his early 20s was walking along Ocean Road, South Shields, when he was assaulted.
He fell to the ground suffering head injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
His condition is described as critical but stable. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The attack happened near to the British Heart Foundation premises at about 3.30am, today.

*A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently in police custody.
