Man found unconscious in Jarrow street is 'critical but stable'

A man remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after being found unconscious in a South Tyneside street.

Officers were called to Grange Road, Jarrow, just before 7am yesterday where a man had been discovered seriously injured on the side of the road.

Ambulance crews who attended called police, who cordoned off the area as they launched an investigation into the incident.

People living nearby say they believed the man may have been knocked from his bike in the early hours.

The road was re-opened to traffic later in the afternoon.

One resident, who lives near the scene, said: “I didn’t hear anything.

"But when I came out this morning the police were there and they had sealed off the road.

“Someone said, a man had been knocked off his bike by car.

"Nobody seemed to know how old he was, but that he had been taken to hospital and it was serious.”

Police have since confirmed there was no bike at the scene when officers arrived.

The man was taken to South Tyneside District Hospital with serious injuries.

He has since been transferred to a hospital in Newcastle

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said the man is in a "critical but stable condition".

Police are appealing to anyone with information in connection with how the man came to be injured to contact them on 101.
