Man left with serious head injuries after assault at Newcastle's O2 Academy

Police are appealing for witnesses following a "serious assault" on a man in Newcastle city centre.

It happened at approximately at 12.50am today, at the city's O2 Academy on Westgate Road.

A 24-year-old man was inside the premises when he was assaulted by a man on the dancefloor. He was struck a number of times to his head.

The victim was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he is detained with serious head injuries.

The offender is described as a white man, 6ft 4in, of very large build and with a bald head.

He was wearing a blue shirt, and left the venue walking in the direction of Westgate Road. He was with a woman in the premises of small build, who is described as having long blond waist-length hair.

She was wearing a short skirt, top and Roman-style sandals with knee length ties.

Detective Inspector Denise Clark said: "We're appealing for help from the public to identify and locate this offender.

"We also want to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack. The O2 was very busy and there will have been a number of people who will have seen what happened and we're asking them to come forward and contact the police.

"This is a serious assault and we need to find the offender quickly. We're asking for anyone who was in Newcastle city centre at this time and who may have seen this distinctive couple to come forward."

Officers are checking CCTV and are also asking for any taxi drivers who may have picked this man up to contact them.

Police are carrying out inquiries in the area and additional officers are on patrol to reassure the community.
