A man facing historic sex abuse allegations is to stand trial.

Raymond Craig is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting an underage girl in South Tyneside in the early 1990s.

The 59-year-old appeared at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday, where he was not asked to enter a formal plea to the seven indecent assault charges he is accused of.

During the hearing, Craig, who was not legally represented due to industrial action by lawyers over legal aid fees, confirmed he would be denying the charges.

Craig, of no fixed address, will be back in court for a plea and case management hearing on October 13.

He will be tried by a jury on December 2.

He was remanded in custody in the meantime.
