Man who threatened police officer with scissors outside South Shields nightclub is sent back to jail

Anthony Maylia had been spotted lunging at a fellow reveller with the weapon when trouble started outside Roxannes nightclub at closing time on December 6.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 24-year-old ran off when he realised he had been seen by a police officer .

Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw told the court: "The police officer pursued him, and as he got close the defendant produced the scissors from the waistband of his trousers, holding them out in front of him.

"It caused the police officer to fear violence may be used."

The court heard that Maylia, who was out on licence from a six-year prison sentence, was aggressive while being arrested.

He pleaded guilty to threatening with a bladed article, common assault, possession of a small amount of cannabis and obstructing a police officer by initially giving a false name.

As a result of the convictions he has been recalled to prison until July 2018.

Judge Deborah Sherwin sentenced him to eight months behind bars.

The judge told him: "In these circumstances, in reality, any sentence I pass in respect of these matters is fairly academic."

The judge said the scissors were not the worst weapon she had seen of their type, but added: "You wouldn't want to be on the receiving end if you were stabbed with them."

Maylia received the six-year sentence for aggravated burglary in 2012, but was out on parole when he committed the offences.

The court heard Maylia, who apologised for his behaviour, had been on a night out around pubs and clubs and had forgot he was carrying the scissors.
