Services between the two stations resumed shortly before 4pm, after delays from 2.15pm.
Trains bound for South Hylton were terminating at Pelaw while an ambulance was called to tend for the elderly passenger, who has a suspected broken leg after falling on one of the trains.
Local bus services were accepting Metro tickets in the affected area. Go North East services 5, 9 and 27 and Stagecoach service 18 were accepting the tickets.
A Metro spokesman confirmed that an elderly passenger fell on the train and suffered a suspected broken leg.
An ambulance arrived on scene just after 3.15pm, with trains returning to normal shortly before 4pm.
