Commuters are being warned that the early-evening closures at Newcastle’s Central Station Metro concourse and platforms are to resume from Sunday.
Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising the Metro, is resuming the 8pm closures – from Sundays to Thursdays – to allow for work. The evening closures had been temporarily halted over the busy festive period but from Sunday, the Metro station at the Newcastle Central will close each evening at 8pm. Director of Rail and Infrastructure for Nexus, Raymond Johnstone, said: “It is important that we return to the early evening closures at Central Station so that the modernisation work can be finished off. “I’d like to thank customers in advance for their patience during the disruption.”
Metro Central had been closing earlier five nights a week to allow contractors to press on with a £6million modernisation scheme, which started in September. The station is getting improvements to accessibility, information and waiting facilities, as well as a bright new look.
The project is scheduled for completion next summer.
