Lowes – who has commentated on Newcastle United games for the past 25 years – will cover three more matches.

"But the problem with rollercoaster rides is getting off them while they’re moving!

"This has been a hugely difficult decision to make, but a right one nonetheless. A quarter of a century working with the likes of Benitez, Dalglish, Given, Hall, Keegan, Robson, Shearer and Speed, as well as co-commentators John Anderson and Mick Martin.

"Who gets to do that? The luckiest guy in the world that’s who. And he’ll never forget it!”

Wendy Taylor, head of media at United, said: “"The news that Mick Lowes is to retire from football commentary on BBC Newcastle was greeted with sadness today, but also with huge respect.

"Mick has been the voice of Newcastle United commentary for 25 years and has covered the club through the highs of cup final appearances and Champions League nights to the lows of relegation.

"Throughout those times Mick has always been a constant, authoritative and passionate voice and one instantly recognisable on the North East air waves and to supporters worldwide via NUFCTV.

"Hugely respected and extremely knowledgeable, Mick is one of the very best in the business.

"His knowledge of Newcastle United is second-to-none and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with him over the years. We wish Mick the very best for the future."

Matthew Raisbeck will take over the commentary of Newcastle's games from December until a permanent replacement is appointed.
