Miles Starforth's pre-season tour diary: Sean Longstaff's 'scary moment' with Newcastle in Dublin

Sean Longstaff will have been nervous before his Newcastle United debut against Sts Patrick's Athletic last night, but not as nervous as he was standing up in front of his team-mates.

It’s a rite of passage for all new signings and those players, like Longstaff, who make the step up from the club’s Academy.

Longstaff chose Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” – and he’s keen to delete all videos of his performance at Carlton House, the club’s base in Co Kildare.

“I sang a little bit of Justin Bieber,” said the 20-year-old. “I was probably the scariest moment of my life being up there.

“I think there are some videos of it. I’m trying to find them all get them all deleted if I can!”

Longstaff, at least, got it out of the way.

“It’s something you have to do, and luckily I don’t have to do it ever again,” said Longstaff, whose younger brother Matty, also a midfielder, turned professional at United this summer.

Footage of initiations is often shared by Newcastle’s players on social media.

Islam Slimani – who spent the second half of last season on loan from Leicester City – gave an unsteady performance during a training camp in Spain earlier this year.

And, thanks to his team-mates, everyone got to see – and hear – it.

Fortunately for Longstaff, his Bieber recital didn’t make it into the public domain.
