Mohamed Diame makes a bold claim after hitting form at Newcastle

Mohamed Diame has warned the Championship that he will only get stronger at Newcastle United.

Diame has hit form in the club’s last two games, the wins over Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City.

The midfielder netted a superb goal in Wednesday night’s 2-0 win at the DW Stadium.

Diame had admitted last month that he had been disappointed with his form since his summer move from Hull City.

The Senegal international said he needed to “wake up” – as he had been “sleeping” in the early part of the campaign.

But Diame feels he is now in his stride at the Championship leaders, who take on Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium tomorrow.

“I’m happy,” said Diame. “I always knew I needed to work more to get my legs back and now I feel more confident.”

Diame, set to go to the African Cup of Nations with Senegal next month, also believes he can get even better as the season goes on.

“I need to keep going, and try to get better and better every single game,” said the 29-year-old.

“I can definitely do much better. I just needed my legs back and I’m confident as well that I will do better.”

Diame ran from deep and played a one-two with Isaac Hayden before scoring Newcastle’s first goal at the DW Stadium.

It was his fourth strike for the club since his move from Humberside.

“It’s a great goal, I believe,” said Diame. “My legs are back, so I can run and push forward again.

“I like giving assists too, but it was a good goal and I’m happy.”

United have won eight of their 11 away fixtures in the league this season.

“We just try to give our best,” said Diame. “We know, away from home, the other team has to go out and attack because they are at home, so they give us more space.

“When we play at home, teams just stay behind and try to not concede.

“When we play away they have to come out and give some space to our strikers to run in behind. We try to give our best.”
