Morpeth bring FA Vase back to North East for seventh time in eight years
Non-league Morpeth Town are the pride of North-East football today after winning the FA Vase at Wembley.
The Northern League side were huge underdogs for the final clash against Hereford FC - the 'phoenix' club who arose from the demise of former pro outfit Hereford United.
But they won 4-1 in a game their 4,000 travelling fans will never forget.
They went behind after just two minutes when Rob Purdie put Hereford ahead.
But veteran defender Chris Swailes equalised after half an hour - and made history by becoming the oldest player to score in a Wembley final at 45.
Luke Carr put the Highwaymen ahead after the break, before Sean Taylor added a third on 59 minutes as the underdogs took the game to their opponents.
Shaun Bell’s deflected effort deep into injury-time wrapped up an emphatic display.
