THE mum of Collabro star Jamie Lambert today spoke of her pride in her son after he revealed he is gay.
Jamie, singer with the Britain’s Got Talent winners who have just signed a major record deal with Simon Cowell’s Syco label, spoke about his sexuality for the first time in an interview with a national newspaper.
The singer from Washington, who has performed many times in South Tyneside, said: “No one asked - I have nothing to hide from anybody. I think it’s really important that all gay people in the public eye just talk about it. The more that it happens, the more normal it becomes.
“I remember when Stephen Gately (from boy band Boyzone) came out and it was a really massive deal. But I think nowadays it’s about being comfortable in your own skin and comfortable with who you fall in love with.
“It’s only an aspect of me, just like it’s only an aspect of these guys who are straight. It’s not all of who I am. I would hate for people to see me as ‘the gay one’, rather than the one who sings that line,”
Today, mum Lorraine Lambert, chief executive of South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Jamie has always been incredibly open about who he is and proud of who he is and I couldn’t be prouder of him.
“It’s never been an issue for anyone he knows and he’s never tried to keep it a secret. He’s the same talented, lovely lad and this doesn’t make a difference to who he is, and hopefully everyone will think like that.”
