Tammy Taylor, 33, has launched Scented Moments by TMT, opening a shop in The Viking Centre in Jarrow.

The store, which sells bath bombs, soaps and melts, was inspired by Tammy’s mother Irene Gilbert, who had a love of smellies.

Sadly Irene died in April 2016, but Tammy was determined to honour her mother’s memory by starting up her own business.

The shop, which opened last month, built on the success of Tammy’s former market stall in Jarrow.

Tammy, who has been helped by partner Danny Taylor, 38, in the run-up to opening, said she was delighted with the response from customers already.

She said: “It has been amazing - the support we have had has been unbelievable. It all started just after my mum died, it was her legacy that started the business.

“She was in a care home and I used to buy things like bath stuff and smellies for Christmas presents and then go around the homes selling them. That is how it all started.”

“When my mum died I didn’t want to not be doing anything, so I decided to start the business.

“My mum is the inspiration behind it and I wanted to do something special.

“We started off by getting a stall in Jarrow Market, which got so busy that we started doing a Wednesday and a Saturday.”

When Danny took ill with pneumonia last Christmas, the couple decided to make the move into a shop where they could have a permanent base without the harsh weather conditions of the winter months.

Tammy, from Wardley, Gateshead, decided to keep the business in Jarrow, where most of their customers are based.

And the mum-of-three is now looking to move the family to the area to be closer to the shop.

She said family and local-run businesses are important to her, and as a result the shop uses local suppliers based in the region for the products it sells.

She said: “I make all the melts and use local family-run suppliers.

“I also make sure that products are suitable for families, particularly the bath bombs, as I wouldn’t sell something if it couldn’t be used by a family.

“We would love to expand in the future, but our heart is in Jarrow.”
