The striker joined the club on a half-season loan from AS Roma yesterday.

But Doumbia – who had been on loan at CSKA Moscow and hasn’t played for six weeks – needs to get his visa sorted.

And the 28-year-old could instead make his debut against West Bromwich Albion at St James’s Park on Saturday.

Asked if Doumbia would be involved against Everton, head coach McClaren said: “We are hoping so. It’s a bit of touch and go, but if not tomorrow, then definitely on Saturday.”

Winger Andros Townsend, signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £12million last month, will make his debut against Everton.
