AN East Shields councillor is calling for a park’s youth shelters to be scrapped – again.
In recent years Coun George Elsom has made efforts to have council bosses remove the two shelters in Cleadon Recreational Park, off Quarry Lane.
The ward’s Independent representative believes that the fixtures just attract anti-social behaviour to the area as youngsters gather there and create a mess.
He says a mattress was recently dragged under one of the shelters and set on fire.
This also happened with an armchair.
Coun Elsom said: “I am calling, yet again, for the shelters to be removed.
“The hooligans have now dragged a mattress under the shelters and burned it down to the frame.
“They have also dragged an old chair there and set that alight too.”
He added: “The whole area is also littered with alcohol bottles and cans. It’s a right mess.”
Coun Elsom says he’s contacted the council to have the park cleaned up as soon as possible.
A South Tyneside Council spokesman said: “We have not had any recent reports of anti-social behaviour in this area. However, now it has been brought to our attention, we will ask our community wardens to do additional patrols of the area. We would encourage people to report any incidents of anti-social behaviour to us so that we can take action to deal with it.”
