Kate Marchant has already achieved success turning round the Armstrong Hall in South Shields.

Now, the landlady is turning her attentions to the Neon in Nairn Street, Jarrow, which closed its doors for what was thought to be for good earlier this year.

However, Kate is determined to see the place cement itself once again into the heart of the community.

The Neon - a former social club - has been a hub of community life on the Scotch Estate for more than 45 years.

New signage has gone up, the garden area is being tidied, new blinds now adorn the windows and the introduction of live sports in the bar.

Kate has also put a shout out for pool, dominoes and darts teams to represent the club in leagues.

She said: “Because the place has been shut for so long and looks derelict, people don’t realise we are back open for business.

“I’ve brought back the bingo nights and I’m looking to introduce party nights on a Saturday as well as quiz nights and family party nights and promotions like Push the Button, where people could win their drink for half-price or even free.

“But I’d love to hear more from the community as to what they would like to see more of at the club.

“There has been a suggestion of live bands and singers, but that is something that will need to be looked at in the future.”

Kate added: “The place has been let down badly in the past, but hopefully with the support of the community we will be able to get the club back up and running as it should be.”

The venue is available for hire for private functions and events. Kate is also keen to attract groups and clubs who are looking for premises during the day.

The Neon is open from 4pm until 11pm Monday to Saturdays and from noon until 11pm on Sundays.
