New library at Hebburn school set to '˜inspire' pupils

The new facility at Hebburn Lakes Primary School, in Campbell Park Road, is proving to be a real page-turner with pupils.

It is giving children an opportunity to develop their reading skills and a love of books.

Headteacher Anthony Watson said: “Developing a love of reading as well as continuing to raise standards has been a real focus for us over the past five years since we opened the school.

“The creation of a stimulating reading environment was an important piece in this jigsaw.

“We were very fortunate to have the support of the governors, funding and space to build this wonderful resource onto the school and are confident it will help us to prepare our children for their future.”

Pupils were given a chance to choose the books stocked at the new library.

Mr Watson added: “The new library is already proving to be a calm, inspirational place at the heart of our school community where the children can learn to read and develop a love of books, both factual and fictional. The support of Seven Stories, The National Centre for Books, was invaluable.

“The children were all able to visit the centre’s book shop to select their own book of choice. As a result we have a library bursting with the books our children want to read.”

The new area is adaptable, with a variety of activities taking place there.

Mr Watson said: “The children and teachers are very keen to reserve a slot in its already full timetable.

“But the space can also be used for other purposes.

“It has been designed with a moveable partition wall and furniture.

“Our intention is to also use it for a variety of training and learning activities, and not only for children, but staff and parents too.”
