Work is continuing to develop the site of the former car wash next to the Esso petrol station on Newcastle Road, Simonside, South Shields, as the firm moves towards its new opening date of January 28.

They have been on site since the summer building the new franchise which will include a cafe with 21 car parking spaces as well as a drive-through.

It had been hoped the new franchise would be open for business in October, however, this was pushed back to December.

Now, it looks on track to finally open its doors to coffee lovers at the end of this month.

The new drive-through is expected to create between 16 to 20 full-time and part-time jobs.

It will be a single-storey with a mixture of pitched roofs, and there will be seats at the front so customers can sit outside.

The cafe will be aimed primarily at motorists. However, it will also serve workers at nearby sites.

The world-famous company started in 1971 in Seattle and since then has grown with more than 15,000 stores in 50 countries.

A spokesman for Starbucks said: “We are very excited to open a new Starbucks store in Simonside Services, Newcastle Road, Tyne Wear in partnership with our franchise partner Euro Garages.

“The new store opens on Thursday, January 28 and will create up to 20 new jobs for the local community. We look forward to serving local commuters, shoppers and families at our new store.”
