Newcastle close to transfer breakthrough

The Deportivo La Coruna defender is reportedly due on Tyneside to complete a move to St James's Park.

Newcastle's move for the 26-year-old comes after the club sold Chancel Mbemba to Porto.

United manager Rafa Benitez was asked for a transfer update after last night's 2-2 draw against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

“We can talk about names, but we have maybe 100 players that we have been linked with," said Benitez. "Just 25 will be enough.

"It's important to stay calm and see if we can add some players, and the important thing is that they're the right players.

"As a manager, you would have liked to have seen these players one month ago, but if we can do something, it will be better than nothing."
