Newcastle United are eyeing a loan deal for Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs, according to a report.

The relegation-threatened club is looking to sign a left-back on loan before tonight's transfer deadline.

Newcastle lost out on targets Guilherme Siqueira and Lucas Orban over the weekend.

Valencia’s Orban has joined Levante on loan, while Siqueira has moved from Atletico Madrid to Gary Neville’s Valencia.

And the Daily Mail claim that United will now turn their attentions to Gibbs, who has started just two Premier League games this season.

The England international needs to be playing week in, week out to secure a place in Roy Hodgson's squad for Euro 2016.

However, a move for Gibbs would seem unlikely given that Arsenal are battling for the Premier League title and needing strength in depth.

Also, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has attempted to reassure the 26-year-old ahead of the European Championships.

Wenger said: "He went through a period that was difficult for him, but now he is back with full power and commitment and he is very fit.

"He will get games and he is a quality player. There is competition, and I understand what you say players have that target of the European Championships.

"But the first and the most important one is the club and the achievement of the club.

"To be at the European Championships is always a consequence of what you have done at the club."

Newcastle have already signed England internationals Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend in the transfer window.

UPDATE: Sky Sports report that Gibbs will NOT be allowed to leave Arsenal on loan before the transfer deadline.
