And he admits Newcastle could recruit from Championship rivals ahead of next season.

Asked what type of players the club would look at, Benitez - who has signed a new three-year deal to remain at the club - said: "Good players.

"That means good players for us.

"That means maybe it will be a Premier League player, maybe it will be a Championship player, because you need experience and character.

"Maybe it’s a young player with quality.

Townsend, in Hodgson’s provisional 26-man squad for Euro 2016, hopes to feature against Australia at the Stadium of Light tonight.

"It doesn’t impact on his (international) career in any particular way," said Hodgson,

"The main thing after such a serious injury and the fact that when he recovered he wasn’t getting a regular game for his club was for Andros to play for a manager who believed in him.

"He’s been given that chance first by Steve McClaren and then Rafa Benitez, and it’s given us with that slightly enlarged squad to take a look at him."And finally, Benitez says he won’t have a problem making the transition from the Bernabeu to Burton Albion.

The 56-year-old started last season at Real Madrid, whose home is the 81,044-capacity Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Newcastle will be visiting some less glamorous grounds next term, including Burton’s 6,912-capacity Pirelli Stadium home, in English football’s less glamorous second tier.
