Newcastle target Ruben Semedo has revealed why he decided to leave Sporting Lisbon for Villarreal, rather than rocking up at St James's Park.

He signed a five-year deal with the La Liga outfit, costing around £12.5million.

Portuguese youth international Semedo said: "I chose Villarreal because I like their style of play.

"The team has a lot of quality and I think can help the team with my quality.

"I had other clubs interested in me, good clubs from England, but when I heard the name Villarreal I decided to come here.

“I’m excited to play in La Liga, to win titles for Villarreal, help the team and have a good season."

Hope for Aston Villa in defender chase

Derby County's pursuit of Grant Hanley, according to reports in the East Midlands.

The Rams yesterday confirmed the signing of Curtis Davies from Hull City, and as a result they are no longer keen to add the Scotland international to their ranks.

Aston Villa, though, remain keen.

Although their financial situation may make any deal tough, especially with United keen to recoup around £5million for the centre-half.

Keeper favours Chelsea move over Newcastle

United are after a goalkeeper. Of that there is no doubt.

But will it be Willy Caballero?

Well, if the Times is to be believed the out-of-contract goalie favours a move to London rather than Newcastle.

Chelsea are rumoured to be keen.

Delph availability alerts Magpies

The Telegraph claim that Fabian Delph will be allowed to leave Manchester City for around £12million this summer.

And Newcastle look set to battle it out with Stoke and West Brom for the England international's signature.

Delph left Aston Villa for the Etihad just two years ago, in a deal worth around £8million.

He has three years left on his City contract.

United were linked with a move for Delph in the January window.

Napoli to enter Mitrovic race?

Napoli could be about to enter the race to land Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer.

But their bid of around £8.5million is set to fall well below United's valuation.

Mitro has been linked with a move to both Besiktas and Fenerbahce in the Turkish press recently.

The Serbian international scored just four goals for the Magpies in the second tier.

Is Reina pursuit still on?

Reports in Italy suggest he has rejected Napoli's offer of a new two-year deal.

Instead, he wants the security of three years.

Could this open the door for Newcastle? Only time will tell.
