Roberts netted twice in yesterday’s 4-2 win away to West Bromwich Albion at the club’s training ground.

Lewis McNall and Liam Gibson also scored for Peter Beardsley’s side, who had been looking for their first win of the year.

Winger Roberts – who had a brief loan spell at non-league Gateshead last season after turning professional at United – is now the Under-21s’ top scorer with six goals.

The 18-year-old – who made his first-team debut last year in the club’s FA Cup defeat to Leicester City – also hit the post and had another effort cleared off the line against West Brom.

Roberts, from North Shields, is keen for a loan spell at a Football League club.
