Newcastle's Ciaran Clark reflects on his 'unreal' move from Villa

The defender, signed from Aston Villa this summer, has been outstanding in recent weeks.

And Clark – who went to Euro 2016 with the Republic of Ireland in the summer – feels he is improving as a player with the help of United manager Rafa Benitez.

"It would have been easy to sit there and be comfortable or whatever, but I wanted to push myself, and give myself a new challenge; a change of scenery, to try and learn new things," said Clark. "I feel like I'm doing that.

"I want to improve my game, and help the lads and the club push for promotion."

Newcastle activated Clark's release clause at Villa Park.

Reflecting on his move, the 27-year-old added: "After the Euros, I was full of confidence coming back and to make this move was unreal for me, personally, and something I was very happy about.

"It all seemed to happen so quick – it was a bit crazy after the rollercoaster of the end of last season.

"But the summer was a brilliant time for me, I'm really happy, and glad that I'm settled and enjoying football."

Clark is expected to play against Brentford at St James's Park this afternoon.

Newcastle are third in the Championship, while Villa are 20th.
