North East weather: Rain on the way out but cold snap to continue

We may have had an unseasonably warm December, but the cold weather is here to stay - at least for the next week.

Hat, scarf and glove weather is well and truly upon us with chilly temperatures forecast for the North East's week ahead.

Sleet and snow is expected on the region's hills tonight, with a temperature of -2 °C as we bed down until the morning.

Tomorrow will bring some icy patches first thing, with showers of snow and sleet later on into the evening.

The back end of this week will see rain, snow and sleet clear, but temperatures will turn colder into Friday and Saturday with widespread frost expected on the ground .

Next week, conditions are expected to warm up slightly - but many are being warned to expect snowfall before the milder weather arrives.
