An investigation into pay levels at NHS organisations has revealed how many employees in the North East are paid in excess of £100,000.

The TaxPayers' Alliance has revealed the second in its Public Sector Rich List series today, with hundreds of senior employees in the North East taking home a big pay packet.

In total, there were more than 50,000 NHS employees and general practitioners across the country taking home more than £100,000.

These included 40 employees of ambulance trusts, more than 1,700 general dental practitioners and more than 37,000 employees of NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs).

Figures for the North East for the number of employees per organisation receiving total remuneration packages in excess of £100,000:

North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust: 4 employees, all non-clinical

Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust: 98 employees, 11 non-clinical

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust: 89 employees, 10 non-clinical

City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust: 179 employees, 8 non-clinical

NHS Sunderland CCG: 1 employee, non-clinical

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust: 255 employees, 5 non-clinical

NHS Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield CCG: 2 employees, both non-clinical

NHS North Durham CCG: 2 employees, both non-clinical

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust: 119 employees, 4 non-clinical

Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust: 106 employees, 6 non-clinical

NHS South Tyneside CCG: 3 employees, all non-clinical

South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust: 71 employees, five non-clinical

Commenting on the research, Jonathan Isaby, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: “No one begrudges paying doctors and nurses well for the tough jobs that they do, but it’s galling to see bosses at failing hospitals continuing to rake in the cash.

"It’s an insult to taxpayers, but it’s even worse for the patients who have suffered because of mismanagement, and worse.

"The rewards-for-failure culture is rife in the NHS and it must be stamped out as a matter of urgency.”

The highest paid person at an NHS Trust was Mary Burrow, Chief Executive of Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board who received £454,404.

Five general dental practitioners, whose earnings totalled more than £3.45 million - £690,572 each on average, were the highest paid people in the NHS.
