The world of news stops for no man, not even a big fat one in a red suit with a big sack and leather boots, shouting at reindeer.

While you were gorging on your festive food and spending your Christmas vouchers, the world of news just kept on turning as it does every year.

Now that January has arrived good and proper, it's time to catch up on everything you might have missed over that strange period between Christmas and New Year.

1. 'Line Ranger' vigilante returns to South Tyneside

The mystery ‘Line Ranger’ is back prowling South Tyneside’s streets in his bid to “make life easier” for residents

The unknown parking campaigner first emerged in 2011, creating residents’ parking bays in a number of streets across South Shields to help householders sick of other people parking outside their homes.

2. South Tyneside cancer survivor spreads positive message

A cancer survivor from South Tyneside has a new year message for others facing up to the disease.

Hebburn mum Lynne Croft has adopted the motto “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain” after coming through a difficult time in her life.

4. The return of the Wet Bandit
1990 festive movie Home Alone is universally loved, so, when star Macaulay Culkin decided to reprise his role as the lone-home defender, it got some serious attention on the internet.

Not least of all from his co-stars. Daniel Stern, who you’ll remember of course from his astonishing performance as Marv, one of the two burglars, has since decided to respond to the surge in Home Alone-nostalgia with his own sensational vlog. 5. The Force Awakens breaks all kinds of records

Most money from an opening weekend, quickest movie to make $1 billion, most loveable leading trio – there are a fair few titles that the new Star Wars movie is claiming, and not all of them are for comedic effect.

$529 million made it the biggest opening weekend ever, and also the most money grossed in a single weekend by a film, it was the biggest single IMAX opening weekend with $48 million grossed, and it was even an achievement for Disney, being their biggest international opening with $218 million.

6. Adults began colouring in

Apparently, eight of the top 20 best sellers on Amazon were colouring books designed for adults, at some point in this festive season, and that’s no coincidence.

In fact, the Creative Colouring Book for Grown-Ups has been launched in the UK and France, attracting attention as a stress-relief device equal to that of meditation.
