KATE OSBORNE: Look out for each other and protect ourselves and others

For most of 2020, we have all had to adapt to a new way of life during the Coronavirus pandemic which has heavily impacted upon the way we live, work and go about our daily lives.

While we recognise this and the difficult restrictions that we are all currently living under, I hope that you can still find pleasure and enjoyment at this time of year, in a safe way that protects your loved ones.

Most of us could hardly have imagined what 2020 would bring and never has our community’s strength and resilience been more tested than this year throughout the pandemic.

It’s fair to say that my inaugural year as Member of Parliament for the Jarrow constituency has posed many challenges.

I certainly did not predict the kind of situation which we have been facing this year.

However, I have been immensely moved by the warmth and generosity that so many people across our communities have shown each other during this time.

I would like to pay tribute to our NHS workers, care workers, delivery drivers, retail staff, police officers, council bin collectors, postal workers, food bank volunteers, and members of our local community who all go that extra mile to help others.

I’ve been humbled by the community spirit across the constituency, how people have followed the rules placed upon them, have stepped forward to volunteer to help those in need, and come together to support each other. I would like to thank you all for the vital part you have played.

During the festive season it’s important that we continue to look out for each other and do our bit to protect ourselves and others by continuing to follow the rules of socially distancing, wearing a face mask and washing hands, as well as the current instructions linked to the tier system.

It is also important that we do everything we can to support our local traders by shopping locally. We are very lucky to have a good range of shops, facilities and services in our towns. We can all do our bit to show our support for our local economy and I would encourage everyone to shop local and use the services right on our doorstep.

As we look ahead to 2021 with cautious optimism with the further roll out of the Covid vaccine, there is no underestimating that this has been a tough year and I can assure you that I will continue to work hard for the people of the Jarrow constituency and continue to hold this dreadful government to account.

I fully understand that this has been a particularly difficult year for the hospitality sector and I am under no illusions the hardship our pubs and restaurants have experienced over the past nine months.

They will not survive without proper support and I’ll keep on fighting in Westminster for the financial help that our area deserves.

Self-isolating for two weeks or ten days without proper sick pay, is a luxury that many people just cannot afford, and the government does not seem to care.

Therefore, those on lower incomes, who cannot work from home, need financial support if we are to get this virus under control.
