Joe McElderry is the nation’s favourite ever X Factor star.

The South Shields singer came out on top of a poll on website Digital Spy.

The 24-year-old, who won the ITV talent show in 2009, beat fellow borough stars Little Mix to the top spot.

The girlband, who won in 2011, features South Shields girls Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall alongside Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. They came third in the poll receiving 5,400 votes.

But Joe trounced the competition with 33,000 votes.

The runner-up, 2012 winner James Arthur, from Middlesbrough, received 19,000 votes, meaning the North East claimed the top three spots.

The poll, which went live before Louisa Johnson was crowned this year’s victor, asked people to vote for their favourite ever X Factor winner.

Joe came out as the most popular, beating the likes of Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and last year’s champion Ben Haenow.

He said: “It’s amazing to be voted the winner and to have that support from people.

“I have always been lucky to have an amazing and supportive fanbase that supports me through thick and thin. They always have my back and that’s wonderful.”

Since winning the X Factor, Joe has released four albums and played concerts around the world.

He’s recently taken a step into the theatre. This Christmas, he’s appearing in his third pantomime, starring as the Spirit of the Mirror in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the New Theatre, Hull.

In September, he took on the title role in The Who’s rock opera Tommy at Blackpool Winter Gardens, and next year he’s setting off on a UK tour in the eponymous role in musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Meanwhile this year, he’s played more than 100 dates around the UK in his Evolution tour.
