These were the eerie scenes on Good Friday 2020 when the strict measures of the first national lockdown were firmly in place.

It was in stark contrast to what is usually one of the busiest days of the year at the seafront in South Shields.

While the fair, pubs, restaurants and cafes remain closed under current covid restrictions, this year South Tyneside’s parks and seafront are busy once more with people allowed to mix outdoors again, either two households or in groups of six.

In 2020, even some of the most popular chip shops were closed on Good Friday, though some were offering delivery or pre-order collection only.
