The couple were so horrified they shared a video of him on social media and managed to get in contact with a local animal shelter who took him in, naming him Scotty after the 33-year-old Port of Tyne worker who saved him.

The dog had a long journey ahead and needed veterinary treatment as well as money to buy good quality food to help him recover.

After reading Scotty’s story in the Gazette, South Shields resident Colin Campbell was so touched he contacted the shelter and sent over 500 Euros to pay for his treatment and food.

Three months later Scotty is back to full health, with a full coat of fur and is now looking for a new forever home.

“It was his little hang-dog face and he was so close to death, I just had to do something and I knew I could help,” said Colin.

“What the young couple did was really heartwarming, they deserve a pat on the back for doing that or Scotty wouldn’t be here now.

“As far as I know he is healthy and doing really well.”

Colin is now appealing to find Scotty a home and has offered to help with the costs of the vaccinations and passport required to bring him back to the UK.

“I can’t take him personally because I have got a cat, but I’ve had dogs all my life. If anybody over here would be willing to adopt him I would be happy to help with the costs of bringing home,” he said.

“I will keep helping the shelter, they cope as best they can but they haven’t got the facilities.”
