Piers Morgan’s decision to quit the show comes just hours after he stormed off set when colleague Alex Beresford called him out for attacking Meghan Markle.

Morgan delivered a scathing review of Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey which had aired overnight in the US and has since been broadcast in the UK.

During the interview, the couple made a number of explosive revelations, among them an allegation that a member of the family – not the Queen or Duke of Edinburgh – had made a racist comment about their unborn son, Archie.

Morgan said on Tuesday morning: “I said as an all-encompassing thing I don’t believe what Meghan Markle is saying generally in this interview, and I still have serious concerns about the veracity of a lot of what she said.”

Following Morgan’s remarks his colleague Beresford defended Meghan, saying: “Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has but yet you continue to trash her…”

Morgan then stood up and said: “OK, I’m done with this” and walked off set, saying: “Sorry, no… sorry, can’t do this…”

When Morgan returned, he said: “Sorry, much as I’d like to sit here taking abuse from you for hours on end, that’s not going to happen…

“I’m just not prepared to take that. I’ll take it from people outside, I’m not going to take it from you as one of our team…”

Beresford said the situation was personal to him, especially the alleged comment about Archie’s skin colour.

Buckingham Palace has since responded to the allegations made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during their interview with Oprah.

The statement on behalf of the Queen said: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
