MINUTE'S SILENCE ... for Coun Joan Meeks, who died on Boxing Day.

A SILENT tribute has been paid to a much-loved South Tyneside councillor.

Coun Joan Meeks, 68, pictured, died last week at South Tyneside District Hospital following a short illness.

A Labour member for Simonside and Rekendyke ward, Coun Meeks never recovered from the death of her only daughter, Michelle Chilley, who suffered heart failure, aged 49, last May.

Members of the planning committee this week observed a minute’s silence. Yesterday, devastated members of Coun Meeks’s family told of their heartache.

Younger sister, Helen Whitfield, said: “Joan was such a beautiful-looking girl, with such a caring heart.”

Coun Meeks will be received into St Bede’s Church in South Shields today at 6pm, prior to a Requiem Mass tomorrow at 10am.

This will be followed by cremation at South Shields at 11.30am.
