Woman in 'stable' condition after being hit by train near Chichester Metro Station in South Shields

A woman who was hit by a train near to Chichester Metro Station is in a stable condition, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the metro station in South Shields at around 9.40pm on Sunday, January 19, and a woman was taken to hospital.

Northumbria Police have now confirmed that the woman is now awake and stable condition.

On Monday, January 20, the force said that the injuries woman had suffered were ‘life-changing.’

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 9.40pm on Sunday, police received a report of a woman being hit by a train near Chichester Metro Station.

“Emergency services attended and woman was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries.”

The North East Ambulance Service attended the scene and took the woman to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “We were called at 9.32pm to reports of a person struck by a train between Tyne Dock and Chichester Metro Stations.

“We sent an ambulance, two of our Hazardous Area Response teams and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance doctor, who also attended.

“One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with life-changing injuries.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance.
