Person rescued from flat blaze in South Shields as fire service warns public over cooking safety

Firefighters have issued a warning to members of the public to watch over their cooking after crews were scrambled to a South Shields flat blaze.

A person had to be led to safety by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) after the incident at ground floor flat in South Shields on Thursday, April 30.

Firefighters from across South Tyneside were scrambled to the property on the town’s Tennyson Street at around 6.20am.

The incident was confined to the kitchen, which has been severely damaged by smoke with the remainder of the property lightly smoke-damaged.

Crews located the person who lives there and led to him safety.

A spokeswoman for the fire service confirmed the cause of the fire and issued some advice to the public.

She added: “The cause of the fire was cooking left unattended. We’d advise everyone to please watch over your cooking in order to avoid this type of fire.”
