PICTURES: South Tyneside kids dress up for World Book Day

Youngsters from across South Tyneside dressed up as their favourite characters to celebrate World Book Day.

Simonside Primary School pupils in Jarrow, had the honour of officially opening their new library as part of the global celebrations.

they were helped by the deputy mMayor of South Tyneside, Coun Alan Smith, and deputy mayoress Coun Moria Smith.

The children from the Glasgow Road school enjoyed a day of literary fun when they came dressed in an array of outfits, ranging from Peter Pan to Cleopatra.

A spokeswoman for the school said: “We held a special assembly and children from each year group were presented with a book by the deputy mayor and deputy mayoress.

“Every class had a visit to the new library and everyone said it is fabulous.”

Little ones from Westoe Crown Nursery, in Sea Winnings Way, trooped along to the Central Library, in Prince Georg Square, South Shields, for a special storytime session.

The three and four-year-olds were read books including The Tiger Who Came To Tea.

Lorraine Owen, early years pupil achievement leader, said: “Everyone had a wonderful time and the librarian was dressed up as a tiger too.

“We have a lot more little girls in our afternoon sessions, so we had a lot of princesses and fairies, and Little Red Riding Hoods.

“But we had some superheroes and a Fireman Sam too. Each of the children also received a little teddy bear when they left, which was lovely.”

Children from St Bede’s RC Primary, in South Shields, also went on a trip to Souter Lighthouse in Coast Road, Whitburn, to hear stories.
