Anthony ‘Babyface’ Nelson is due to return to the ring on Saturday, April 28, when he will take on a foreign opponent in a six round warm-up bout.

It will be the first bout for the super flyweight boxer since losing his Commonwealth title to Jamie Conlan back in 2016.

The 31-year-old is one of a number of fighters lined up on the card, including fellow South Tyneside boxers Paul Gidney and Sam Menzies.

The trio all box out of Harton and Westoe Gym under the guidance of trainer Mal Gates.

Paul Edmed, who is helping to organise the event, said: “Everything was in place for the night, but then one of our main sponsors pulled out.

“We are now trying to find new sponsors to ensure the night goes ahead as planned.

“This is an important night for boxing and will feature Anthony Nelson’s comeback fight – so it has to and will go ahead.”

Nelson has been back in the gym training and will feature on the show ahead of a further fight in June.

Trainer Mal Gates said: “He was forced to pack boxing in due to lack of sponsors and work commitments but now he’s back stronger, fitter and sharper than he has ever been.”

A JustGiving crowdfunding page has been set up in a bid to help cover the costs of putting on the show – including covering paramedics and doctors fees for the event.

Mr Edmed added: “These boxers rely on sponsorship to help them and we need as much financial support as possible.

“Any business who is able to sponsor for £2,000 will also receive VIP tickets.”

Tickets for the night are on sale now priced £35 for standard or £75 for VIPs and are available from any of the fighters or www.newcastlelegends.com.

Anyone who is able to help sponsor the night in anyway or who would like to make a donatioin visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/paul-edmed or contact Paul Edmed on 07552 038 154
