Plea for public to help tackle flytipping after waste found dumped in South Shields

The dumped waste has now prompted council chiefs to call on the support of the public to help crackdown on the scourge of flytippers.

The items were found in West Holborn, South Shields and is believed to have been left on Tuesday.

Other flytipping hotspots in recent weeks include South Shields Riverside, Hebburn Marina and land behind Jarrow Hall in Slake Road, Jarrow.

The council are also keen to remind people to be cautious when paying a ‘man-with-a-van’ for waste removal services that they find on social media.

It is after previous cases with householders being duped into paying for waste to be removed – for anything from £30 to £100 – after using social media sites to either ask for help to move rubbish or after seeing a post offering help for cash.

Where abandoned waste can be traced back to a particular property, it is the property owner or tenant who could be held responsible.

Residents are advised to check that the waste carrier they use is registered to do so and ask for a waste transfer note as a receipt.

A South Tyneside Council spokesperson said: “We are determined to use all the powers available to use to crack down on flytipping across South Tyneside. It is not only unsightly and hazardous, but the cost to clear up and investigate places an extremely heavy burden on taxpayers.

“While residents can help us by ensuring their waste is disposed of safely and responsibly, we also ask that they continue to report incidents and support us with our investigations by supplying as much information as they can about those responsible or the vehicles involved.”
