Sometime between midnight and 3am today a 19-year-old woman was raped in an alleyway in St Nicholas Street, in the city centre.

It is believed that the attack happened in an area between the Subway sandwich shop and the High Level Bridge, Northumbria Police confirmed today.

The attacker is described as being white, around 5ft 9ins to 6ft tall and of skinny build.

He has short dark brown hair and stubble and was wearing dark blue skinny jeans and a navy coloured short sleeve T-shirt. He spoke English but not with a local accent, police added.

Inquiries are ongoing into the incident and police are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and saw a man matching the description to come forward and speak to police as soon as possible.
