Police confirm boy spotted in a South Shields street in pyjamas is home safe.

A police search was sparked in a part of South Tyneside after reports of a child wandering the street in his pyjamas.

Officers were alerted to the sighting of the eight-year-old boy in Nevinson Avenue, Whiteleas, by a concerned member of the public at 8.30pm.

As police began a search of the area, which included the use of the Northumbria Police helicopter, to find the youngster, he had returned home.

Meanwhile, concerns for the child, initially thought to be six-years-old, were shared on Facebook with people being asked to look out for the youngster and to report any sightings to police.

It led to people actively going out to help with the search.

Police have confirmed the youngster has been found safe and well after returning home shortly after speaking with the member of the public who initially raised concerns.
