Police today dismissed rumours that action will be taken against anyone showing public support for England during the Euro 2016 football tournament.

The Northumbria force, which covers Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, are believed to have taken the unusual step after it was rumoured on social media that anyone flying the flag of St George or Union flag could face police action.

It posted on its official Facebook page: "We would like to dismiss rumours that action will be taken against anyone hanging or flying the St George flag, Union Jack, or any other country's flag, or wearing similar shirts, in the run-up to and duration of Euro 2016.

"We have absolutely no problem with England or indeed supporters of any country demonstrating their allegiance to their team, whether it be flags, shirts or any other legal and decent means.

"All we ask is that anyone celebrating or commiserating should do so sensibly and within the law."
