Police have launched an appeal for information after a teenage boy suffered serious head injuries after a car smashed into a lamppost on a South Tyneside road.

A blue Renault Clio collided with the lamppost on the slip road from the A19 Nortthbound onto the A194, near to the Lindisfarne roundabout, Jarrow, at about 11.30pm on Friday, March 11.

A 16-year-old passenger in the vehicle was taken to hospital after the crash for treatment to what are believed to be serious head injuries.

The road was closed for two hours while investigations were carried out. Inquiries into the collision are ongoing and anyone with information to help is asked to contact police.
