Police have launched an appeal for information after a man was stabbed in a back lane in South Shields.

The 21-year-old suffered serious injuries during the attack in a lane at the back of Prince Edward Road. towards the Nook, at about 10.10pm last night.

Inquiries are still ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, but police believe the victim was with a friend in a white car while the offender was in a black car.

He suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries and is currently in hospital.

Extra officers are in the area carrying out enquiries into the incident and offering reassurance to local residents.

Local Neighbourhood Inspector John Smith said: "Our enquiries are in the early stages of this incident and while the circumstances are unclear we do not believe this was a random attack.

"Extra officers will be on patrol in the area, both to carry out enquiries into the incident and to speak to any local residents who may be concerned and offer them reassurance.

"We're appealing for witnesses and would ask anyone who was in Prince Edward Road last night to come forward and speak to us, in particular if they saw either a black or white vehicle. The information they have may prove crucial in our enquiries."
