Police talk down man from roof in South Tyneside

A South Tyneside street was brought to a standstill due to a man on the roof of a building.

Emergency services were called to Stanhope Road in South Shields at 11.47am.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police, said: "We had concerns for the safety of a man on top of a derelict building."

The road was cordoned off for more than an hour and traffic redirected while police dealt with the incident and the man was brought down safely.

The spokesman said the man did not pose a danger to anyone in the area.
