No trains are running across the Tyne and Wear rail network on Friday, December 20 or Saturday, December 21 due to a strike by drivers.

Members of the RMT union have been embroiled in a bitter dispute with Metro operator Nexus over drivers’ pay, terms and conditions, and shift patterns.

The strike is expected to cause huge disruption across the region – clashing with two busy Christmas shopping days, Black Eye Friday nights out, and a Newcastle United home match.

Nexus confirmed on Thursday afternoon that there had been no late breakthrough in negotiations and the strike will go ahead as expected.

Commuters who have season tickets for the Metro – including weekly, monthly, and annual tickets, as well as student and corporate passes – can now claim compensation by filling in a form at this link on the Nexus website – https://www.nexus.org.uk/metro-season-ticket-strike-compensation-request-form

Compensation can be issued either in the form of additional days being added to passenger’s current tickets, a new Pop card being sent out with one or two days’ balance on it, or a cheque.

When filling out the compensation form, passengers are asked to provide the start and expiry dates of their current season ticket. But don’t worry if you do not know that information, it is not mandatory.

However, if you choose to have additional days added to your current season ticket, you will have to state which day you want your additional days to start on.

The expiry date of your current ticket is available on Metro ticket machines, on the Pop card checker app, or by calling Nexus on 0191 2020 747.

A Nexus spokesman confirmed: “The compensation scheme will be open to those holding a Metro season ticket – so that includes weekly, monthly and annual tickets for adults, students and Corporate pass holders.

“It does not include Network One season tickets or Gold Card holders.
